There are two types of carvings on my website: round pieces, done with a single knife (chip carving); and rectangular pieces, done with chisels and gouges. I no longer do rectangular pieces, but below is a video showing the chip carving process:

Chip carving is the oldest style of woodcarving, with examples found in nearly every culture and time in history. Using only one tool – a razor-sharp chip carving knife – precise cuts are incised into the wood, removing slices (“chips”) of various shapes and sizes.

I first create the design on the computer, then print the pattern and transfer it to the wood plate. The video shows the next steps: sharpening the knife; carving the shapes and letters; painting the letters; and applying the finish.
